As a publicly funded, non-profit organization, LAA provides affordable legal services in family law, domestic violence, child welfare, immigration, and youth and adult criminal defense.

Mission: Resolve legal problems for disadvantaged Albertans and, in doing so, protect the Rule of Law for the benefit of everyone

Services Provided:

→ Adult Criminal Law: If you’re an adult (age 18+) who has been charged with a crime, we may be able to help if:

→ Youth Criminal Law: If you’re a youth (age 12-17) who has been charged with a crime, we can help you. All youth in Alberta are eligible to receive a lawyer. Parents and Guardians cannot apply for legal aid on behalf of the child. All youth clients must contact Legal Aid Alberta directly by phone or speak to duty counsel at court.

→ Family Law: if you’re dealing with a family law issue related to children, support payments or property

→ Family Violence Matters: if you’re dealing with family violence, we can help you get an Emergency Protection Order (EPO) at no cost. This order will keep a violent or intimidating family member from contacting or coming near you and your children

→ Mental Health: if you are dealing with a mental health law issue, we may be able to help you if:

  1. you have a hearing coming up before the Alberta Review Board
  2. you want a mental health review panel:

→ Immigrant and Refugee Law: if you’re dealing with immigration law or refugee matter, we can help you understand and protect your legal rights. We may be able to help you with:
